I currently have a fireplace and chimney.  The chimney does not go through the roof, it is open to the attic.  Can I use ventless logs in this application?  Do I need to plug the top of the chimney in the attic first?

The main issue would be to properly seal the flue so heat wouldn't escape from the fireplace into the attic. The fireplace should be checked by a professional mason or check with the building codes be sure it will be safe to install ventless gas logs with the chimney disconnected in the attic.
